Through taking an active role in crime prevention, residents can reduce the opportunities to become the easy targets that criminals are looking for.
See the following list for some best practices for deterring holiday mishaps:
- Be aware of your surroundings, make eye contact with passers by; people are less likely to attempt a crime if they might be recognized
- Try not to go out alone at night, employ the buddy system
- Be sure to lock your vehicle every time you park, even during the day
- Keep your valuables safe and out of sight, especially in your vehicles
- Set a reminder on your phone to check that doors and windows are locked before bed
- Keep your porch lights on overnight to help deter criminal activity
- Designate a hiding spot for packages and give those instructions for your delivery person; be sure to remove packages from front porch areas as soon as possible
- Do not share your personal or financial information with unknown individuals
- Going out of town? Sign up for a Vacation Watch through the Harris County Sheriff’s Office watch program. Click here to complete the online form.
Additional steps you can take are:
- Get a video doorbell with a recording function
- Get to know your neighbors. If someone is out of place, you are more likely to recognize it if you are familiar with who you live next to
- Have a trusted neighbor watch over your home if traveling (pick up mail, packages, etc.)
- Consider vacation holds at the post office if leaving for an extended trip
Being vigilant is always a good idea. No matter where you live, you can do your part to minimize the risk of becoming a target for crime. Remember, always trust your instincts. Speak out and often if you see something. If something doesn’t seem right, call the HCSO non-emergency line (713) 221-6000, and let them know. Of course, ALWAYS dial 9-1-1 in the event of an emergency.
